REFLECTION
Experience
Advanced Typography builds on the foundation laid in the
Typography module, allowing us to apply what we learned
previously in a more creative and expressive way. I was
particularly excited to take this course since Typography
was one of my favourites last semester. This module offered
greater freedom for creativity, which was a significant draw
for me. My favourite task was Task 2, where we had the
opportunity to create our personal brand. Task 1, which
covered the basics of typographic systems and layout design,
was also enjoyable. However, Task 3, which involved creating
an entire typeface, felt overwhelmingly daunting. It was a
lengthy and meticulous process, and I acknowledge that there
is still room for improvement. Despite the challenges,
including the increased workload compared to Typography and
the need to balance it with other modules, the module has
been a valuable learning experience. It has provided
insights and skills applicable to various design areas and
aspects of life.
Observations
Throughout this module, I observed the critical importance
of conducting visual research before diving into tasks.
Paying close attention to details is crucial, as even minor
elements can significantly impact the overall design. For
instance, when developing letterforms in Task 3, I
frequently compared my designs to existing typefaces to
ensure consistency and uniformity. Additionally, maintaining
steady progress each week and seeking feedback from Mr.
Vinod proved essential. Both general and specific feedback
were invaluable in refining and improving our designs.
Findings
This module offered numerous opportunities for learning and
growth. Task 1 introduced me to the fundamentals of layout
in typography, which has proven influential for subsequent
tasks and modules. Task 2 highlighted the extensive effort
required to create a brand identity that truly reflects our
values and personality. Finally, Task 3 allowed me to delve
deeper into typeface creation, continuing the journey from
Typography. Each task was interconnected, and the skills
acquired are transferable to future projects. Despite the
challenges, I am grateful for the knowledge gained and the
guidance provided by Mr. Vinod.
