INSTRUCTIONS
Brief
For this task, we are instructed to produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one we had analyzed, or as a reaction to it. We should also apply our knowledge of design principles in our creation. We may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey the visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted.
1. Visual References
The visual references I discovered depicted the continuous
journeys individuals embark on in their lives to achieve greater
accomplishments and success. In relation to my United Nations
Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) of Quality Education, I aim
to emphasize the importance of providing students with ample
opportunities to uncover their true passions and interests in
life.
2. Idea Exploration
(i) Sketches

Fig 2.1 Sketch #1 | Week 5
(13/3/24) |
For my first sketch, I wanted to show that, at the end of the
day, everyone has the same goal and destination in mind: to
graduate with flying colors, which represents their academic
success. I drew stairs (in this case, stacked books) from
various angles, leading up to the earth with a graduation hat to
represent all students from around the world. I also drew a
laptop behind to represent the fact that education should
include both technological and physical resources. I chose
to draw the scene high above the clouds to emphasize that
learning is a long journey/process.

Fig 2.2 Sketch #2 | Week 5
(13/3/24) |
My second sketch inspired me to create an artwork depicting my own educational journey. Having switched courses several times, I wanted my artwork to reflect the journey I went through in finding the course I actually wanted and genuinely enjoyed doing. In my artwork, I also wanted to emphasize that there isn't just one option/path a person can take.
After receiving feedback, Ms. Jinchi commented that, while she
liked the visuals of my first sketch, she liked the idea and
concept behind my second sketch and suggested that I not only
make it more visually and aesthetically pleasing, but also
convey a stronger message with my artwork.

Fig 2.3 Sketch #3 | Week 7
(20/3/24) |
The following week, I showed Ms. Jinchi my revised sketch, explaining that it represented my soul-searching and educational journey from architecture to computer science, and finally to UI/UX design. (A more detailed explanation in my rationale).
Ms. Jinchi liked the sketch and commented that it was a much
better approach than my original sketch, making a few notes. She
advised me to add an extra lightning bolt to balance out my
sketch, as well as to look into the works of
Roy Lichtenstein, as she said it gave the impressions of the artist's work, and
to analyze and interpret the use of colors used by the artist in
my artwork. She also advised me to create two color variations of my
design, one coloured and the other black and white.

(ii) Process
|
|
|
|
I started by transferring my sketch from Procreate to
Illustrator using the pen tool.

Artworks | Week 7 (21/3/24) |

|
| Fig 3.3 Colour Palette | Week 7 (21/3/24) |
After taking Ms. Jinchi's advice, I researched Roy
Lichstentein's artworks and combined a few of them with some
comic artworks from other artists to create the colour palette
for my design.
|
|
|
Fig 3.4 Process #2
(Colours) | Week 7 (22/3/24) |
The colour palette I chose for my design consisted
primarily of primary colors such as blue, red, and yellow,
in order to achieve the same theme as Roy Lichstentein's
artworks and other superhero comics.

Fig 3.5 Process #3 (Shadings:
Gradients & Halftones) | Week 7 (22/3/24) |
I then added gradients and halftone effects to my
design to give it a pop-art/comic look.
|
|
|
|
Finally, after referencing
comic books and grammar traditions, I decided to include boxed captions to indicate the
time periods of each of my courses.
After finishing the colored version, I followed Ms. Jinchi's request and created a black-and-white version, but in two slightly different variants.
Though I liked the black-and-white version on the
right, I felt that the colored version made my
design stand out even more by distinguishing the
various elements presented in it.

Credit line:
- Title of art/design work: "Unveiling Passions: A Quest for Fulfillment"
- Artist’s/designer’s name: Iman Mikudim
- Year: Mar 24, 2024
- Size: A4 (2480 x 3508)
- Type: JPEG
-
Medium: Digital (Illustrator)
Rationale:
I wanted my artwork to reflect the journey I took to discover my passion, which is design. Three main separate and distinct groups can be identified based on the proximity and similarity of pictorial symbols for each course: Architecture, Computer Science, and Creative Media. I've also included the repetition of cracks in between the stairs, lightning, and wind to represent the rough storms I encountered during my journey. The triadic relationship between the colors red, blue, and yellow creates harmony on the color wheel by balancing their distribution and complementary contrasts. The blue and halftone effects represented rain and a gloomy atmosphere. In contrast to the harsh weather, the top section uses more vibrant and striking colors (yellow and red), emphasizing the overall design and conveying fulfillment and a bright future.
Golden Ratio: Although the journey is from bottom to top,
the movement of the design progresses from top to bottom
due to the hierarchy and use of scale, highlighting
the importance and allowing one to first see my journey in design,
then computer science, and finally architecture. The design
achieves asymmetric balance through a zigzag composition of small
to large clouds, distributing visual elements unevenly yet
harmoniously across the composition, creating a dynamic sense of
movement and interest through the variation in sizes and
placements of objects or elements.

FEEDBACK
Week 4
Specific Feedback (Questions):
- Does the artwork need to have the same design principles as the one we analyzed in task 1/2? No.
- What is the minimum/maximum amount of design principles that needs to be present in the artwork? No max/min. However main principles like 'Balance' should be presented in the artwork.
- Can it be either portrait/landscape? Yes.
-
Are softwares like Illustrator/Procreate allowed? Yes.
Week 5
Specific Feedback:
-
Ms. Jinchi commented that, while she liked the visuals of my first
sketch, she liked the idea and concept behind my second sketch and
suggested that I not only make it more visually and aesthetically
pleasing, but also convey a stronger message with my artwork.

REFLECTIONS
This project has taught me a lot, and I owe it all to Ms. Jinchi for
her thorough explanations. Though I struggled to create a revised
sketch at first, I spent a lot of time considering how to depict my
UNSDG Goal as a powerful and impactful piece of artwork. Overall,
I am very pleased with the design I created, especially since it
allowed me to experiment with a new art style. This was a great final
project, and I gained lots of information and skills that will
undoubtedly influence my future designs.
