    INSTRUCTIONS

    Brief

For this task, we are to assess, investigate, document, and analyze the existing art/design work we selected in Task 1. We are asked to study the design principles found in the selected work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we have chosen.

Fig 1.1 Selected design representing 'Quality Education' | Week 3 (21/2/24)

    Credit line:

    • Title of art/design work: Design for Education Illustration
    • Artist’s/designer’s name: Tubik (portfolio: dribbble)
    • Year: Jun 21, 2019
    • Size: 1600x1200 px
    • Medium: Digital

    Phase 1: Observation

    Fig 1.2 Colour wheel & palette | Week 3 (21/2/24)
    • The design work is in landscape format.
    • On the left side, we can see a girl looking down at her screen focusing on writing notes on her tablet.
    • On the right side of the screen, we can see the girl's hair flowing towards the right, showing educational elements/symbols scattered throughout her hair.
    • We can also see papers scattered across the floor showing the girl's grades and notes of her studies.
    • As for the visual elements, the main colours observed are red, pink, purple, and blue, all of which are analogous colours to one another.

    Phase 2: Analysis

    Fig 1.3 Golden Ratio & Rule of Thirds | Week 4 (28/2/24)
    • The design is asymmetrically balanced, as the right side appears heavier than the left. Despite the uneven distribution of elements, the girl's voluminous hair and the emphasis on her wearing a red sweater and red glasses make the layout appear perfectly balanced as a whole.
    • Rule of Thirds: The girl has been strategically placed on the left vertical line of the composition.
    • Golden Ratio: The movement of the design progresses from right to left, starting with the girl's flowing hair, then the direction of her gaze downwards, bringing focus to the tablet, and finally, the papers scattered on the floor.
    • The colours used are in harmony as they all belong to the same colour family, resulting in a cohesive and visually pleasing aesthetic.
    • The composition as a whole, along with the symbols depicted in the girl's hair, constitutes a pictorial symbolThree main separate and distinct groups can be identified based on the similarity and repetition of words, formulas, symbols, and equipment observed: Mathematics, Science, and English.
    • The continuity principle is observed as the girl's hair extends beyond the boundaries of the artwork in an open composition, fostering a sense of expansion and continuity within the design.

    Phase 3: Interpretation

    • This illustration was designed to showcase the shift in knowledge acquisition from printed books to digital sources like websites and mobile applications, emphasizing the growing role of technology in education.
    • It acknowledges designers' efforts to create educational materials that are useful, clear, and aesthetically pleasing. Prioritizing these factors helps create engaging educational materials that facilitate better understanding among users.
    • The papers scattered on the floor represent the girl's dedication and hard work, while the A+ grade signifies her academic success. The open composition of the girl's hair indicates that learning is a lifelong journey and a never-ending process.
    • Overall, the design relates to UNSDG's 4th goal as it depicts 'Quality Education', with access to a variety of sources for studies and learning for all.

    FEEDBACK

    Week 4

    Specific Feedback:

    • Ms. Jinchi commented that I have a good sense of observing, analyzing, and interpreting the design principles presented in the artwork.
    • She also remarked that I articulate well with my words when describing and presenting my work.
    • Additionally, she appreciates that I always have further or backup options to elaborate on my ideas, noting that this can be a useful skill in the future when meeting with clients.
    • In terms of work progression, Ms. Jinchi advised me to move some of the words interpreted in the 2nd phase down to the 3rd phase for clearer content and understanding.

    REFLECTIONS

This task really helped me dive deep when it came to observing, analyzing, and interpreting the artworks of others, which is an important and useful skill to have, especially when designing our own artwork later on in task 3. Being able to apply such principles, while also being able to articulate the meanings and intentions behind them, is what makes good and impactful design.
