Tutorial 7 | Animation in Photoshop
Tutorial 8 | Intro to After Effects
- Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
- After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
-
This software is used in the
post-production phase, and has hundreds of
effects that can be used to
manipulate imagery. This allows you
to
combine layers of video and images into
the same scene.
In this tutorial, we are taught how to
transform still images (graphic elements and
photography) into moving images and animate layers
sequence from various elements and
platform. The 4 basic animations we learnt
were; Position (x, y), Scale, Rotate and Mask.

INSTRUCTIONS
Photoshop Process
I began by altering the colours of the book to various shades of blue to match the night sky background in my artwork. Next, I stacked the same image three times to create the impression of a stack of books. However, I later changed the colours once more, opting for different shades of purple to ensure they were distinguishable and didn't clash with the background.
Animation Process
| Fig 1.15 Background | Week 13 (25/12/22) |
For the setting, I began by selecting a gradient background that starts with purple at the top and transitions to blue as it moves down the middle and bottom parts of the artwork.
|
I then added 2 images of the same clouds and animated them in a spiralling motion instead of a linear one. This choice aimed to centralize the focus and movement within the artwork, avoiding a typical left-to-right or vice versa flow.
For the mooon, I added some glow and a fractal effect to enhance its glowing radiance as intended. This technique was pivotal in achieving the luminous effect I envisioned for the moon.
| Fig 1.18 Books & Portrait | Week 13 (26/12/22) |
I positioned the books at the center as planned, starting from where the bottom of the moon ends, ensuring that my portrait would fit perfectly in the center of it.
|
I then animated some starts & comets into the background. This addition was inspired by my fondness for stargazing. Living in Malaysia with its often cloudy and rainy weather, I deeply missed the experience of seeing stars. Including them in the animation allowed me to reminisce about those moments and bring a celestial touch to the artwork.
| Fig 1.20 Title | Week 14 (28/12/22) |
Lastly, for the title, I utilized the font I created in Typography, called "Seridoni," for the word "shine." I incorporated an intertwining effect learned in Illustration and Visual Narrative, intertwining the same word with another font alongside mine.

REFLECTIONS
As much as I enjoyed working on this task, I faced setbacks twice due to food poisoning and then contracted COVID, all within a span of 3 weeks. These situations hindered my progress and limited the time I could work on it as much as I would have liked. Nevertheless, I am still satisfied with the outcome and believe that I have included everything I wanted in my self-titled artwork.
